Guerin Catholic toughed out a season-opening win on the road Friday, edging Martinsville 13-11.
The Golden Eagles held the lead for most of the game, but the Artesians slid ahead after making a field goal in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. Eventually, Guerin was able to answer, as Thomas Kaser booted a 21-yard field goal with 5:15 remaining in the game. The Golden Eagles held on to the lead from there.
Guerin Catholic led 10-0 at one point during the second quarter. Brendan Downey got GC on the board by scoring a 33-yard touchdown off a Luke Keller pass. Kaser made the extra-point kick, then converted a 25-yard field goal in the second period. Martinsville got on the board with 30 seconds left in the half with a safety.
Keller compiled 100 yards passing, going 5-of-14 through the air. Kaser also accomplished quite a bit on the ground, running for 141 yards on 22 carries.
The Golden Eagles will host Lafayette Central Catholic, the No. 2 team in 1A, next Friday.
