The Guerin Catholic girls basketball team continued its homestand on Thursday, falling to Cathedral 56-26 at the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles stayed with the Irish in the first quarter, which ended with Cathedral ahead 14-10. Katie Koger helped out by making all four of her free throws, while Aliyah Dorsey and Mia Thompson both hit 3-pointers.
But the Irish took control in the second quarter, outscoring GC 21-3 to lead 35-13 at halftime. Olivia Labus’ basket and a free throw from Delaney Klee were the Golden Eagles’ only points.
Guerin Catholic coach Marc Quaranta said turnovers were the cause of his team’s struggles.
“We counted nine in the first quarter and it just kept going from there,” said Quaranta. The coach pointed out that the Golden Eagles, despite “the amount of extra possessions we gave them of turnovers and offensive rebounds,” still held Cathedral to 56 points.
“We have a pretty good front line defense, it’s just we’re giving teams too many extra possessions,” said Quaranta.
Guerin was able to outscore the Irish 13-12 in the third quarter, with Klee draining a pair of 3-pointers. She would lead the Golden Eagles with seven points
Cathedral led 47-26 going into the fourth period, and the Irish’s defense took over in that quarter, not allowing GC any points.
The Golden Eagles are 4-4 and host Cardinal Ritter on Saturday afternoon.
“We got one day of practice to cut back some turnovers and try to take are care of the ball a little bit better,” said Quaranta.
