NOBLESVILLE – The Guerin Catholic girls basketball team dropped a home game to Cathedral 50-26 Thursday night at the Eagles Nest.

The Irish came out hot against the Golden Eagles, nailing four 3-pointers during the first four minutes of the game to jump ahead 12-0. Cathedral led 14-0 late in the quarter before Caitlyn Sharpe scored off a steal to get Guerin Catholic on the board right before the end of the period.

The Golden Eagles kept battling, trying to work their way into the game in the second quarter. Kori Dues provided some bright spots, as she made a 3 early in the period, then hit a jump shot during the later minutes. Cathedral led 25-10 at halftime.

Guerin Catholic cut that lead to 28-16 late in the third quarter after Megan Cobb and Reagan Haines made layins. The Irish’s Layla Gold drained a 3 to put her team back up by 15, but Dues struck again with another triple, keeping GC within 31-19 going into the fourth.

“I’m really, really pleased with how our girls battled and fought,” said Golden Eagles coach Danielle Cardinal. “Having somebody hit four 3s and being down 12-0 puts you in a big hole. But we fought our way back. The girls played tough. I saw a lot of really positive things out of a lot of different players. We got the shots we wanted. We just got to make them, and I think then that ball game turns a very different tide.”

But Cathedral opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run, after Jaeda Wilson hit a 3 and Gold was good on a traditional three-point play. Dues drained her third triple of the game before the Irish went on another 6-0 run.

Dues finished the game with 11 points, while Cobb scored seven. Cardinal was also pleased with Dues’ defense, saying that Dues played “the best defense I’ve seen anyone play on Layla.”

“Kori was outstanding,” said Cardinal. “And being physical isn’t something Kori actually loves to do, and she did it amazingly well for us. We knew she was capable of it. I think this proved to her that she was capable of it, and I think this is really, really good for her growth and our team’s growth.”

Guerin Catholic is 4-6 and off until Dec. 17 when it plays at Greenwood.
