The Guerin Catholic boys basketball team got its first-ever three-peat last week.

The Class 3A No. 5 Golden Eagles won their third consecutive sectional championship last Saturday by beating Tri-West 63-39 in the final of Sectional 25 at Frankfort’s Case Arena. It’s the eighth sectional championship in program history for Guerin Catholic.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Bruins in each of the four quarters, leading 8-5 after the first period. Guerin Catholic powered ahead in the second quarter, outscoring Tri-West 20-9 for a 28-14 halftime lead. The third quarter was more of the same, as GC won that period 17-8 to go up 45-22 entering the fourth quarter.

Ryne Paris was the Golden Eagles’ top scorer, pouring in 20 points and also dishing out five assists and making four steals. Bryson Cardinal again reached double-double status with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jake Grissom also scored 14 points.

Guerin Catholic is now 23-4 for the season, the second-highest win total for the Golden Eagles in program history. The 2011-12 GC team went 24-5 and won its first-ever state championship that year.

The Golden Eagles travel to Greenfield-Central on Saturday to play No. 3-ranked New Palestine for the Regional 14 championship. That game tips off at 4 p.m., following the 1 p.m. Class 1A game between North Decatur and Liberty Christian.
