Golden Eagles cruise in CCC opener

Guerin Catholic’s Finn Holden pitched three innings of relief after hitting an RBI groundout during the Golden Eagles’ 7-1 Circle City Conference win over Bishop Chatard on Tuesday.

The Guerin Catholic baseball team began Circle City Conference play Tuesday with a 7-1 home win over Bishop Chatard.

The Golden Eagles scored one run in each of the first three innings. In the first inning, Guerin Catholic loaded the bases, then Karson Smith scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Grant Beard.

Luke Gremelspacher opened the second inning with a double, then scored on Finn Holden’s RBI groundout. After Tate Troxell struck out the side in the top of the third inning, the Golden Eagles scored again. Carson Kail hit a one-out double, then Brody Cain came in to run for him. Cain moved to third base on Beard’s sacrifice fly, then scored on a base hit by Ben Canada.

The Trojans scored their lone run in the top of the fourth inning, but GC responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Liam Zorger scored on a Nolan Ratcliff single, then Smith and Ratcliff both got home when Ian Taylor reached on an error. Canada scored the Golden Eagles’ seventh run in the sixth inning.

Kail finished the game with two hits. Troxell got the pitching win with seven strikeouts in four innings, then Finn Holden threw the other three innings, striking out four. Both pitchers allowed only one hit each.

Guerin Catholic is 4-1 overall and plays at Bishop Chatard this afternoon to complete the conference series.
