Golden Eagles advance to title game with win over Brebeuf

Guerin Catholic will play for a third consecutive sectional championship tonight after a big win over a big rival.

The Class 3A No. 5 Golden Eagles beat Brebeuf Jesuit 59-45 Friday in the semifinals of Sectional 25 at Frankfort’s Case Arena. The two teams met last year at Guerin Catholic, where the Golden Eagles won a double-overtime thriller for the sectional title.

Guerin Catholic jumped out to a 16-7 lead after one quarter, then led 32-19 at halftime. The Golden Eagles achieved their largest lead in the third quarter, going up 37-21 before the Braves got within 43-34 after three quarters. Guerin Catholic outscored Brebeuf 16-11 in the fourth.

Bryson Cardinal led the Golden Eagles with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jake Grissom and Ryne Paris both scored 14 points, with Paris collecting seven rebounds.

Guerin Catholic is 22-4 and plays Tri-West for the sectional title at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
