Jungle Jams camp starts July 21
Does your child have a knack for rhythm? Don’t they all? Youngsters ages 5 to 7 can cultivate those instincts into budding talents during the annual Jungle Jams music camp, which this year runs 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 21 to 25.
Led by instructor “Miss Lisa” (a.k.a. “Groove Lady”) of Bongo Boy Music School, campers are introduced to common instruments and basic musical concepts while enjoying fun physical activities and even making their own simple instruments to take home.
Here’s a charming video recap from a few years back, and you can read more and register your camper here.
Prism Project in the spotlight
Everyone has an artistic statement to make, and that’s the cool truth behind the Prism Project, the Center’s performing arts day camp for youth with a range of physical, sensory, and cognitive disabilities. Professional instructors and volunteer “Buddies” provide one-on-one guidance as the campers channel their talents and interests into an original stage production.
The third year of the Prism Project at Allied Solutions Center is getting underway, with the culminating performance set for June 22 at the Studio Theater. Carmel Monthly magazine writer Janelle Morrison has a story about the origins of the program, as well as a quick tour of other education and outreach programs at Allied Solutions Center.
Behold the mighty four-string wonder
The seemingly humble ukulele can be a powerful, versatile, expressive instrument in the right hands*, and it’s also a great starter ride for people who have never played music before. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of your friends and neighbors have joined Uke Nation (figuratively speaking, not an actual thing) through the array of ukulele classes offered here at Allied Solutions Center.
A new section of Beginner Ukulele, recommended for ages 14 and up, runs July 9 to Aug. 6 under the guidance of local singer-songwriter Meghan Cristeen Martin. Give it a shot, and if you have what it takes (fingers, etc.), you can move up to General and Advanced classes.
*The “right hands” certainly include those of Jake Shimabukuro, just announced as part of the upcoming season.

- Stand-Up Comedy Practicum is a four-week course for graduates of Intro to Stand-Up Comedy, and it’s proving just as popular. This summer’s session sold out almost immediately after going on sale. If you want a taste, the advanced students will present their graduation performance Aug. 15 at the Studio Theater (on sale soon).
- The Palladium Bookies reading club will meet June 9 at the Payne & Mencias Palladium to discuss Shy: The Alarmingly Outspoken Memoirs of Mary Rodgers by the author/composer daughter of Broadway legend Richard Rodgers. Next up on Aug. 11 is Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk, the tale of a young woman’s adventures amid the 1930s New York art and literary scene.
