The Westfield girls tennis team is headed back to the state finals.
The No. 4-ranked Shamrocks swept No. 16 and host Homestead 5-0 last Saturday to defend their semi-state championship and return to the Barbara Wynne Tennis Center at North Central for a quarterfinal match at noon Friday. Westfield will play No. 12 Bishop Chatard, which beat No. 6 Fishers 3-2 at the Center Grove semi-state.
The Rocks and the Tigers reached semi-state by defending their regional titles last Wednesday.
Westfield swept No. 16 Delta 5-0 at the Noblesville regional for their second consecutive trophy, while Fishers beat New Castle 4-1 to win the Mt. Vernon regional, marking the Tigers’ fifth consecutive regional championship.
At Lebanon, No. 2 Carmel lost a close regional final 3-2 to No. 1 Brebeuf Jesuit. The Greyhounds won both of the doubles matches, with the Braves taking all three singles matches.
In individual play, University’s Laurel Buttrick won the Lebanon sectional with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over South Vermillion’s Jaci McClain. Buttrick is 19-3 and plays at the North Central individual regional on Saturday, taking on Bishop Noll’s Sophia Nowacki in a 10 a.m. first-round match.
