Girls tennis sectionals began on Wednesday with semi-final matches, and all four Hamilton County winners easily advanced to today’s championship matches.
At Carmel’s Todd Witsken Tennis Center, the No. 1-ranked Greyhounds beat Westfield 5-0, not dropping a set. The Shamrocks’ Maddie Heilmann gave a tough battle to Franny Werner at No. 3 singles, with Werner winning 7-5, 6-2.
Carmel will play Guerin Catholic, which beat University 5-0. The Golden Eagles won four matches in straight sets, while No. 1 doubles Shanna Shuler and Eryn McMullen came back to win over the Trailblazers’ Ellen Trautman and Ryan Ricks. The University duo won the Pioneer Conference championship at No. 1 doubles.
Meanwhile, No. 8-ranked Hamilton Southeastern beat host Noblesville 4-1 at Noblesville East Middle School. The Royals got all four of their wins in straight sets. The Millers’ No. 2 doubles team of Alex Greer and Kaylee David won that match, getting past Jillian Pence and Nikki Hite in a third set super tiebreak, 13-11.
“I thought our singles players girls did a nice job coming out focused early and setting the tempo for the match,” said HSE coach Kirk Webber. “They all came out and got big leads and never looked back. They only dropped one game between the three of them. It was nice to have the overall match clinched after the first three matches were off the court.”
Southeastern will play Fishers in the championship. The Tigers beat Hamilton Heights 5-0, scores from that match are not available.
Both championship matches start at 4:30 p.m.
