Fishers advances 21 swims…HSE qualifies 11, Millers 3, ‘Rocks 2
The Carmel girls swim team looks to be in excellent position to extend its state championship streak.
The Greyhounds advanced all 27 of its swims out of Friday’s state preliminaries into this afternoon’s finals at the IU Natatorium. Twenty-four of those swim qualified for the championship heat, with the other three moving to the consolation heat.
Carmel earned the top seed in all three relays, starting with a new state record of 1 minute, 38.86 seconds for the medley relay squad of Berit Berglund, Vivian Wilson, Alex Shackell and Meghan Christman. The old record was set by the Greyhounds in 2015, this year’s group improved on it by 0.39 seconds. The Carmel foursome of Grace Dougherty, Erin Cummins, Hayley Reed and Gretchen Lueking finished first in the 200 free relay, while Shackell, Kiera Kask, Cummins and Lynsey Bowen was first in the 400 free relay.
Berglund set a new state record in the backstroke event of 51.50 seconds, improving the 2016 mark of 51.65 that had been set by Claire Adams, a 16-time state champion for the ‘Hounds. Bowen, a freshman, tied the state record in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 4:45.15. Bowen matched the 2015 mark of Emma Nordin, who also finished the race in 4:45.15. Carmel went 1-2-3 in the 500, with Cummins finishing second and Alexandra Ward taking third. Shackell earned the top seed in the butterfly event, giving the Greyhounds six top seeds going into the finals.
Fishers had an excellent preliminary round, sending 21 swims to the finals. The Tigers qualified 12 swims for the championship heat, including all three relays, and nine more to the consolation heat.
Jo Jo Ramey is the second seed in the 200 freestyle, while Kate Mouser took the second spot in the individual medley. Both swimmers also competed on the medley and 400 free relays, joining Grace Lux and Kalli Agapios on the fifth-seeded medley relay and Nalanie Cortez and Emma Schumacher on the third-seeded 400 free squad.
Hamilton Southeastern advanced 11 swims to the finals, with six going to the championship heat and five to the consolation heat. Kennedy Fisher qualified second in the breaststroke, while Crawford took second in the butterfly. Both also swam on the third-seeded medley relay with Grace Newton and Ashley Saple. Fisher and Saple joined Amelia Vicory and Ava Olson on the seventh-seeded 200 free relay team.
Noblesville qualified three swims to the finals. Maya McDonald took eighth in the breaststroke, earning her a spot in the championship heat of that event. McDonald joined Exley Tricker, Caroline Santerre and Mia Field to qualify 11th in the 200 free relay, while McDonald and Field teamed with Sophie Resner and Emily Knott to take 15th in the medley relay. Both relay swims will compete in the consolation heat.
Westfield’s Macy Hoaglan also reached the consolation heat in two events, qualifying 10th in the 500 free and 15th in the 200 free.
Saturday’s swim meet begins with the diving preliminaries and semi-finals at 9 a.m., followed by the swimming and diving finals at 1 p.m.
Positions 1-8 qualify for championship heat (“A” Final), positions 9-16 qualify for consolation heat (“B” Final), positions 17-18 are alternates.
