The University girls soccer team cruised past Western Boone 6-1 in a Thursday game.
The Class 1A No. 14 Trailblazers led 2-0 at halftime. Senior Lily Snyder scored three goals and also handed out an assist. Seniors Brooke Andrus and Halle Von Ah each got one goal, with sophomore Brooke Toombs scoring University’s final goal of the game. Seniors Meredith Malott and Lucy Snyder each made one assist.
The ‘Blazers also won the junior varsity game 2-0. Both goals were scored by freshmen: Ella Longoria scored from outside the 18 in the first half, then Sydney Epstein found the back of the net with a few minutes left in the game.
Carmel, ranked No. 4 in 3A, beat Brebeuf Jesuit 3-1 on Thursday at Murray Stadium.
The Greyhounds scored two goals in the first half in quick succession. Tamara Smith put in a cross from Ashley Witucki in the game’s 22nd minute, then Emma Antoine finished a shot in front of the goal 37 seconds later, with Elyse Reed making the assist.
Susie Soderstrom got Carmel’s third goal unassisted in the second half on a high hard shot from the 20. Greyhounds goalkeeper Erin Baker made five saves, with Autumn Ackerman getting two saves.
“The good news is the team will have faced all of the other five schools in IHSAA 3A Sectional 10 in regular season matches by next Monday evening,” said Carmel coach Frank Dixon. “The bad news is we will complete three of those games in a six-day period beginning with tonight’s game. The girls passed tonight’s test with a 3-1 win over a Brebeuf Jesuit team which has been ranked in the top 20 almost all year long. We were able to do this while getting everyone on the team some competitive minutes.”
The Greyhounds are 10-1-2 and host Zionsville on Saturday evening.
