The Hamilton Heights girls soccer team beat Class 2A No. 20 Yorktown 6-4 on Tuesday.
The Huskies controlled the middle of the field and that created their first goal, when Makena Trew scored on a pass across the box from Emily Stern. Katy Beery got Heights’ second goal on a penalty kick to make it 2-0, and that would be the halftime score.
Elaina Page scored the Huskies’ first goal of the second half on another PK. Heights then traded goals with Yorktown in the second half; every time the Tigers scored and cut the score to one, Heights answered back.
Kendall Ferguson scored for Heights, assisted by Trew, then Page and Trew also added one more goal. Tessa Harr had nine saves.
The Huskies are now 6-2 for the season. The Heights junior varsity also won 6-0.
Carmel, ranked No. 4 in 3A, cruised past 3A No. 19 Lawrence North 8-0 in a Tuesday Metropolitan Conference game.
Susie Soderstrom and Emma Antoine both scored two goals for the Greyhounds, with Emily Speidel, Kate Donovan, Elizabeth Hargis and Naomi Mann all scoring one. Kelsie James and Abby Dickerson both made two assists, with Mann, Aaliyah Thompson, Tamara Smith and Emily Roper all handing out one. Erin Baker made two saves.
“Finally some shots began to find their way into the net,” said Carmel coach Frank Dixon. “The coaches felt that if we could play with more width while switching the ball quicker the result would be more goals. Tonight almost every assist came from a wide player plus our center backs and defensive midfielders did a great job with switching. If we can continue to improve on these two areas, we may have solved our scoring woes.”
The ‘Hounds are undefeated in the MIC at 3-0 and are 6-1-1 overall. Carmel hosts Lawrence Central at 7 p.m. tonight.
