Girls soccer: HSE’s May scores game-deciding kick to beat Westfield, Noblesville gets 300th win for Coach Brady

The Hamilton Southeastern girls soccer team won a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game Wednesday almost at the last minute.

It was a next-to-last minute for the Class 3A No. 1 Royals, as freshman Sydney May kicked in a goal with 1:48 left in the second half to lift Southeastern to a 1-0 victory at 3A No. 4 Westfield.

“Our team plays for 80 minutes,” said HSE coach Greg Davidson. “And that is really exciting for us coaches, because we’re playing till the end. We’re not holding back and we’re not hoping. We’re playing for the 80 minutes. The referee has to stop the game before we’re going to quit.”

Davidson said his Royals team was “pretty dominant” in the first half, then credited the Shamrocks in the second half, saying that “Westfield had a good majority of the second half with some better play than us.” But in the last 10 minutes, Davidson said his team got settled in, and that helped Southeastern score its goal.

The Royals are 4-0-2 in conference play and 11-0-2 overall. Southeastern has two games next week, playing at Pendleton Heights on Monday before hosting Zionsville next Wednesday to finish conference play.

“I think that we still aren’t even at our peak yet,” said Davidson. “It’s looking like we’re going to peak at the perfect time.”

Westfield goalkeeper Emma Deitsch had six saves.

“I think we played really well,” said Shamrocks coach Hannah Eggert. “I think Emma Deitsch in goal had an outstanding game tonight. I think our backline played well. It wasn’t the result that we wanted, but we saw a lot of good things offensively and defensively that we think we can carry forward into the rest of the season.”

Westfield is 2-2-1 in HCC play and 7-3-2 overall. The Rocks host 2A No. 8 Brebeuf Jesuit Saturday morning.

Noblesville, the No. 2 team in 3A, picked up a historic win when the Millers beat 3A No. 10 Zionsville 1-0 in a Wednesday HCC game.

The victory marked the 300th win for Noblesville coach Mike Brady. Senior Meredith Tippner made a penalty kick in the first half to score the Millers’ score and get her coach up to that milestone number.

Noblesville is 3-0-2 in the conference and 8-0-2 overall. The Millers play another conference contest Saturday at 3A No. 12 Brownsburg.

Fishers, ranked No. 17 in 3A, fell to Brownsburg 2-0 in a Wednesday HCC game.

The Tigers are 2-2-1 in conference play and 6-4-2 overall. They host Harrison Saturday morning.
