The Carmel and Guerin Catholic girls lacrosse teams are both back in the Indiana Girls Lacrosse state semifinals.
The top-seeded Greyhounds reached the semis with a 15-5 win over Brebeuf Jesuit at Murray Stadium, navigating rain delays that forced the game to finish early. The Golden Eagles also battled the weather, but waited it out and got a late-night victory, 17-4 over Center Grove.
The two teams will play in the state semifinals the week of May 26 at Noblesville, along with the other two state semifinalists.
The Greyhounds led 7-2 after the first quarter. Carmel led 11-4 with around 2:20 left in the second period, which is when the game was halted due to a thunderstorm. The game resumed a little after 7:30 p.m. and the ‘Hounds added a goal to up 12-4, Elle Tomalia made a free shot.
Camel added three more goals after an abbreviated halftime. Sophie Mock, Norah Rafferty and Breckin Hare all found the back of the net. The game ended after the third quarter after lightning was detected in the area.
Mock finished the game with five goals; she also assisted Hare’s goal in the third quarter. Tomalia scored three goals and had three assists in the second quarter. Hare totaled three goals and two assists, while Avery Goehl had three goals.
Carmel coach Josh Miller was happy his team got off to an early lead – “that always helps,” he said. “Builds the confidence, and even going into that weather delay, we were playing some pretty good lacrosse. It’s easier locker room conversations at that point.”
Guerin Catholic had just started its game when the weather intervened. The Golden Eagles were already up 1-0 after a Caroline Ford goal, but lightning stopped the contest after only 35 seconds.
The game finally got going shortly after 9:30 p.m., and Guerin Catholic wasted no time taking control, leading 5-0 at the 8:30 mark. The Golden Eagles led 12-0 at halftime.
Gabby Deer scored five goals, dished out two assists and dominated the draw controls with 10. Ford and Jane Cline each put in four goals. Lucy Esposito, Claire Flannagan, Sophia Galvin and Lila Jones all had one goal each.
Ford handed out two assists and Noelle Perhacs had one. Sophia Galvin collected three ground balls. Audrey Papay made six saves.
