Girls basketball roundup: UHS blasts Bulldogs in second half

Another game, another second-half rally – and another win for the University girls basketball team.
The Trailblazers improved to 3-0 by beating Clinton Central 58-23 on Friday. University was down 6-4 after the first quarter, then had the game tied at 14-14 by halftime.
The ‘Blazers opened the third quarter with a 14-0 run, and cruised from there. The Bulldogs played a 1-3-1 trap game that limited University inside, and didn’t allow its leading scorer Lindsey Syrek to get the ball – she only scored two points in the first half.
But Syrek scored the first basket of the second half, the Trailblazers got their pressure going, and that quickly turned the game in University’s favor. Syrek exploded for 23 points in the second half, giving her a total of 25 for the game. Syrek reached double-double status with 15 rebounds and also made six steals.
Lily Snyder added eight points, while Lucy Snyder scored six. Brooke Andrus also added six points and dished out five assists.
University’s next game is at Waldron on Tuesday.

Shamrocks win second straight game

Westfield scored its second straight victory on Friday, winning at New Castle 48-35.
The Shamrocks got out to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter, and maintained that advantage at halftime, 21-15. Westfield then outscored the Trojans 17-9 in the third quarter, using solid ball and help side defense and patient offense to secure the win.
Annabelle O’Hair led the way for the ‘Rocks, with 12 points and five rebounds. Megan Rops scored 10 points.
Westfield is now 3-1 and hosts Fishers next Friday to open Hoosier Crossroads Conference play.

Golden Eagles fall to Jay County

Guerin Catholic dropped a 69-37 game to Jay County Friday at the Eagles’ Nest.
The Patriots led 20-6 after the first quarter and 44-11 at halftime. Sydney Geis scored 12 points for the Golden Eagles, with Grace Hackett grabbing five rebounds.
Guerin Catholic is now 0-2 and hosts Roncalli at 7:30 p.m. tonight to begin Circle City Conference play.
