Girls basketball roundup: Tigers sail past Fort Wayne South

Fishers opened the New Year with a comfortable win at the Tiger Den, beating Fort Wayne South Side 83-53 on Saturday.
The Class 4A No. 5 Tigers led 17-11 after the first quarter, then dominated the second period, taking a 41-20 lead at halftime. Fishers finished the game by outscoring the Archers 19-9 in the fourth quarter.
Katie Burton led the Tigers with 28 points, including three 3-pointers. Olivia Smith had an outstanding game, with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists. Hailey Smith added 11 points. Katie Howard drained three 3-pointers for nine points and Audra Emmerson collected six rebounds.
Fishers is 13-2 and will play at New Palestine on Wednesday.

Millers take care of Martinsville

Noblesville picked up its fifth consecutive win on Saturday, sailing past Martinsville 73-47 at the Artesians’ gym.
The Millers outscored Martinsville in each of the four quarters, leading 18-10 after the first period and 37-26 at halftime. Noblesville poured in another 23 points in the third quarter, then held the Artesians to six points in the fourth.
Ashlynn Shade had another great game for the Millers, with 28 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. Emily Wood had 12 points and made two blocked shots. Brooklyn Smitherman had nine points and six rebounds, while Mallory Miller dished out seven assists and made seven steals.
Noblesville is 12-3 and hosts Carmel on Wednesday.

Royals close 2020, open 2021 with wins

Hamilton Southeastern finished 2020 and began 2021 the same way: With victories at home.
On Thursday, the Class 4A No. 9 Royals beat Terre Haute South 80-26 on Southeastern’s Senior Night. The Royals were firmly in control from the start, never allowing the Braves more than nine points in a quarter. Southeastern led 19-7 after the first period and 39-16 at halftime.
Four players scored in double figures: Makayla Hinshaw had 15 points, Olivia Brown contributed 14, Riley Makalusky added 12 and Lydia Self scored 11 points. Self also led the rebounding with eight, while Shalyn Rathbun collected seven rebounds and Hinshaw pulled five.
Brown dished out five assists. Hinshaw made five steals and Jocelyn Davis had four steals.
On Saturday, HSE won a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game over Brownsburg 45-36. The Royals again outscored their opponent in each quarter, leading 22-18 at halftime, although the Bulldogs cut Southeastern’s lead to one point a few times. But the Royals were able to hold on and get the victory.
Hinshaw scored 15 points, with Makalusky adding 12 points. Brown had four rebounds and four assists, while Hinshaw made five steals.
Southeastern is 1-1 in conference play and 8-2 overall. The Royals play at Warren Central on Thursday.

‘Rocks run victory streak to eight

Westfield continued its long win streak on Saturday by cruising past Anderson 69-45 in an away game.
The Shamrocks began their eighth consecutive victory with a dominating first quarter, outscoring the Indians 23-4. Westfield led 36-17 at halftime, then had good third period by adding 18 points to take a 54-29 lead.
Alyssa Crockett had a tremendous game, reaching double-double status with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Crockett also dished out eight assists and blocked three shots. Olivia Robey added 11 points and handed out five assists, while Hailey Remaks made four steals.
The Shamrocks are 11-3 and are back at The Rock on Wednesday, hosting Bishop Chatard.

‘Hawks win HHC opener

Sheridan got its fourth consecutive victory on Saturday, winning at Rossville 42-34 in its Hoosier Heartland Conference opener.
The Blackhawks led the Hornets 8-2 after the first quarter and 16-11 at halftime. Sheridan then pulled ahead further in the third period, going up 27-16 by the end of the quarter.
Lillie Dickerson scored 23 points for the ‘Hawks with Allie Delph adding nine and Taylor Bates scoring seven.
Sheridan is 4-1 and hosts Crawfordsville on Tuesday.
