The Westfield girls basketball team dropped its season opener on Wednesday, falling to North Central 67-37 at the Panthers’ gym.
The Shamrocks stayed with North Central in the first quarter. A 3-pointer by Chesney Tebbe put Westfield ahead 11-8, before the Panthers scored four points to end the period with a 12-11 lead. Alyssa Crockett added five points for the ‘Rocks in the first.
Two free throws from Jessica Castor kept Westfield within 14-13 with 7:31 left in the second quarter. But NC took over after that, scoring 11 straight points to lead 25-13. The Panthers led 30-20 at halftime, then opened the second half with a 7-0 run.
North Central led 44-23 late in the third quarter. Hailey Remaks made a basket for Westfield, then Crockett drained two free throws to cut the lead to 44-27 at the end of the period. But the Panthers went on another run, scoring 12 points to lead 56-27 early in the fourth.
Crockett scored 13 points for the ‘Rocks; the 6-3 junior also had six rebounds and two blocked shots. Remarks, a 5-10 junior, added seven points.
Westfield will play its first home game of the season Saturday afternoon, taking on Pendleton Heights.
