Carmel won a defensive battle with Hamilton Southeastern Friday afternoon in a matchup of two top-five girls basketball teams.
The No. 1 Greyhounds beat the No. 4 Royals 40-24 at the Eric Clark Activity Center. The tone was set early, as Carmel led Southeastern 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. Bridget Dunn had the lone basket for the ‘Hounds.
The Greyhounds held a 12-6 advantage at halftime, with Emily Roper scoring four points in the second period. Carmel outscored the Royals in each quarter, leading 22-13 after three. Dunn helped out with six points during the third period.
In the fourth quarter, the ‘Hounds pulled away by pouring in 18 points. Carmel sealed the game at the free-throw line, making all eight of its foul shots. In fact, the Greyhounds were perfect for the contest, going 10-for-10 from the line. Evan Spidel was 4-for-4, making all of her shots in the fourth period.
Dunn led the scoring with 15 points and also collected five rebounds. Kate Clarke added nine points.
Ryan Viele drained two 3-pointers for Southeastern, leading her team with nine points. Olivia Brown added seven points and also handed out four assists. Lydia Self and Riley Makalusky each pulled five rebounds.
Carmel is 4-0 for the season and opens Metropolitan Conference play on Tuesday by hosting Lawrence North. The Royals are 3-1 and play at Noblesville on Wednesday.
