GC’s Leo Wessel wins Junior Masters

Two Guerin Catholic players made an impact at the Indiana Golf Foundation Junior Tour’s Masters Tour Championship, which took place early this week at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.
Leo Wessel, a sophomore-to-be for the Golden Eagles, played a consistent 36 holes and won the Masters Boys division of the tournament. Wessel carded a five under par 139 for his two rounds, starting with a two-under 70 in Sunday’s first round.
Wessel went one better in Monday’s second round, carding a three-under 69. He had seven birdies total for the tournament, and also played bogey-free in the first round.
Two more Hamilton County players finished in the top five. Cole Starnes, an incoming junior at Hamilton Southeastern, tied for second with a four-under 140 for the tournament. Starnes and Bloomfield’s Happy Gilmore both went one-under 71 during first-round action, then both carded three-under 69s in the second round. Starnes totaled nine birdies during the event.
Sam Booth, a recent Carmel graduate, finished fourth with a one-under 143. Booth, who has committed to Valparaiso University, played even in the first round with a 72, then had a one-under 71 in the second round. He also had nine birdies for the event, including seven in the second round.
In the Masters Girls division, Christina Pfefferkorn, a senior-to-be at Guerin Catholic, finished a narrow second. Pfefferkorn and Newburgh’s Hailey Kirkland each finished with 146s, sending the action into a a playoff, which Kirkland won.
Pfefferkorn scored 74 during her first round and was even at 72 in the second round. She had five birdies for the tournament.
Two Carmel players reached the top four. Michaela Headlee, an incoming Greyhounds sophomore, took third by scoring a 148. That included a one-under 71 for her first round. Headlee finished with four birdies.
Sydney Longstreth, recently graduated from Carmel and soon to be at Ohio University, placed fourth with a 149. She totaled six birdies for her round.
