University’s comeback fell just short against Covenant Christian, as the Warriors beat the Trailblazers 13-8 in the championship of Class 2A Sectional 43 at Sheridan.

Covenant scored seven runs in the top of the first inning. University put up three runs in the second inning: Owen Schellhase bunted in Ethan Cutsinger for the first run. Later, Jimmy Caldwell and Schellhase scored when Charlie Ranek hit a sacrifice fly.

Schellhase stepped up again in the third inning, blasting a center field double with the bases loaded to bring in Cutsinger, Beckett Suh and Caldwell. With that, the Blazers had cut the Warriors’ lead to 7-6.

A two-run home run in the fifth inning gave Covenant a 9-6 lead. University added a sixth inning run when Ryan Castetter singled in Cooper Cammack. But the Warriors scored four in the top of the seventh to solidify their lead. Caldwell doubled in Griffin Wright in the seventh inning for the Trailblazers’ final run.

Schellhase was 3-for-4, driving in four runs. Mark Hamby and Caldwell both hit a double.

In its semifinal game, University beat No. 4 Cascade 9-4. Castetter doubled in Ranek in the third inning for the Blazers’ first run, then Caldwell smacked a double to bring in Cooper Burnett for a fourth-inning score.

The Cadets scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 4-2, but University came back with five runs in the top of the sixth. Schellhase tied the game with a two-run hit to send Burnett and Caldwell home. Later, Castetter singled in Schellhase and Jasper Owens, then Suh doubled Cutsinger home to give the Blazers a 7-4 lead.
