The Guerin Catholic girls basketball team avoided a Circle City Conference shutout on Friday by beating Brebeuf Jesuit 44-34 in a girls-boys doubleheader at the Eagles Nest.
The game was tied at 3-3 after the first quarter; Carly Wilson hit a 3-pointer for the Golden Eagles’ only points. But Guerin Catholic got going in the second period, leading 13-9 at halftime. Free throws made up the majority of GC’s points, with the Golden Eagles going 8-of-12 from the line.
Guerin poured in 31 points in the second half, outscoring the Braves in both quarters. Nine different players scored for the Golden Eagles, led by Nicole Cunningham’s nine points. Kathryn Loso went 7-of-8 from the free throw line to score all her points, while Olivia Labus added eight.
“Girls played hard and stepped it up in the second half,” said GC coach Jeff Buckner. “We played one of our more solid games defensively.” The 34 points is the fewest allowed by Guerin all season.
The Golden Eagles finished conference play 1-4 and are 5-15 overall. Guerin Catholic will host Decatur Central on Tuesday.
