Gary D. Gordon

August 17, 1937 – March 21, 2025

Gary D. Gordon, 87, Atlanta, passed away on Friday, March 21, 2025, at home after a long, well-lived life. He was born Aug. 17, 1937 in rural Madison County, the son of Harold E. Lola A. (Cole) Gordon.

Gary attended Boxley grade school in Hamilton County in addition to grade schools in Tipton before graduating in the class of 1955 from Tipton High School. When called upon, Gary proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He attended Wilmington College in Ohio on a work-study program and then graduated from Indiana University in 1962.

Gary married his soulmate, Barbara Ann Hussey on Dec. 17, 1965, and they shared over 59 years of marriage together.

Gary worked as a banker for 35 years and truly enjoyed his work. He started with Indiana National Bank in downtown Indianapolis in 1972 and retired from its successor, J.P. Morgan Chase Bank in 2005. He was a member of the Indiana Bankers Association. Gary was a longtime member and former Deacon of the Atlanta Christian Church and a 50-year member of Indiana Freemasons. He was past Worshipful Master and Secretary of the Atlanta Lodge before combining with Austin Lodge #128 in Tipton. Gary was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a 50-year member of the Tipton Elks Lodge #1012.

Gary and his family enjoyed operating a concession business he called “The Stand” for 28 years. His family remembers working alongside Gary at local fairs and festivals where they enjoyed interacting with the public and preparing delicious food together. He will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who truly cared about others and his community.

Gary’s family includes his wife, Barbara, of Atlanta; two daughters, Ann (Shane) Waymire of Tipton and Debra Hall of Fishers; seven grandchildren, Brittany (Ryan) Downham, Drew Anderson, Tiare (Robert) Brown, Trenda Nash, Courtney (Conner) Campbell, Ashley (Zach) Cash, Emily Hall, and their father, Mike Hall; six great-grandchildren, Corbin Hunsaker, Chloe Downham, Averie Downham, Jack Brown, Walker Brown, and Cecelia Brown; brother-in-law, John (Judy) Hussey of Windfall; sister-in-law, Jo Lynn Hussey of rural Tipton; and several nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; two siblings, Barbara Arlene Gordon and Dorcel Dwain Gordon; and brother-in-law, Michael Hussey.

A funeral service celebrating Gary’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2025, at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Jody Brown presiding. The service will begin with a Masonic ritual by members of Austin Masonic Lodge. Burial will follow the funeral at Fairview Cemetery in Tipton. Visitation for family and friends will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
