Four schools in Fishers will take part in We the People state competition
Middle and high school Hoosier students statewide have competed in regional We the People competitions hosted by the Indiana Bar Foundation around the state.
We the People is an instructional program that teaches students the history and principles of American constitutional democracy and deepens their understanding of government. State competitions will take place on Dec. 10 and 11 in Indianapolis at the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station.
Locally, two middle schools from Fishers will compete on Dec. 10:
- Fall Creek Junior High School
- Fishers Junior High School
… and the two high schools from Fishers will compete on Dec. 11:
- Fishers High School
- Hamilton Southeastern High School
Students explore the history, philosophies, application, and evolution of the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and other founding documents as part of the program. They collaborate in teams to research and analyze historical and contemporary issues, crafting formal statements and defending their positions before a panel of judges in a simulated legislative hearing.
In addition to participating in the state civics competition, on Dec. 10 the middle school students will have an opportunity to witness a naturalization ceremony of approximately 100 individuals being admitted as new citizens of the United States. The naturalization ceremony will be presided over by Indiana Bar Foundation board member Hon. James Sweeney of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.
The state champions will go on to represent the Hoosier state in the national We the People competitions this spring. The High School We the People National Finals will take place April 9 to 11 outside Washington, D.C. The Middle School We the People National Invitational will take place via Zoom April 25 and 26.
