Early last month, the CDC shortened COVID-19 quarantines to 10 days – seven with a test – and the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) supported this as an option. We have been asked on occasion if we would be following ISDH’s suggested seven- and 10-day quarantine. The short answer is not at this time. Here’s why:
First, in order to return after seven days, the student must produce a negative test from day five, six, or seven and have no symptoms. Some testing sites will not test a person if they do not show symptoms. By the time a student receives his/her results, it’s likely to be close to 10 days anyway.
Second, in order to return after 10 days, according to the guidelines, the student could still potentially be contagious and must strictly follow a series of preventative measures. The ISDH even states on the same memo for these changes “that the safest option is to follow previous guidance and quarantine for 14 days without testing.”
With that said, our district team has been discussing these possible changes because we do see some benefits for our students and families by reducing the length of the quarantine, and will continue to weigh out the potential risks and safety ramifications with this decision. We will be sure to keep you updated on any changes to our current quarantine protocols.
