The Westfield baseball team kept its record perfect in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference on Friday by taking care of Brownsburg 11-2 at the Shamrocks’ field.
With the victory, Westfield earned a sweep of the Bulldogs and is now 4-0 in league play. Brownsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the ‘Rocks scored three in the bottom of the inning and never trailed again.
Keaton Mahan batted in Westfield’s first run, with his single sending Quentin Markle home. Trey Dorton was the next to score, getting home on Casey Fanelli’s sacrifice fly. Mahan went home on an RBI groundout by Cody South.
The Shamrocks increased their lead to 4-2 in the third inning when Mac Clarke scored on a passed ball. Clarke led off the inning with a double. Westfield then poured in five runs in the fourth inning, starting with a single by Dorton to send Markle home.
The ‘Rocks loaded the bases, and South drew a walk to score Mahan. Ryland Sutcliffe came up next, and his left field single scored Clarke and Fanelli. South later got home on a wild pitch.
Westfield added two more runs in the sixth inning. Sutcliffe scored on Dorton’s sacrifice fly, then Brayden Hibler stole home plate.
Dorton, Mahan and Sutcliffe all had two hits, with Collin Lindsey smacking a second-inning double. Logan Nickel pitched five innings for the win, striking out four and allowing four hits. Jacob Culp threw the final two innings; the ‘Rocks also turned a double play in the sixth.
“As well as we’re playing and the good wins that we’ve got, our ceiling is still pretty high,” said Westfield coach Ryan Bunnell. “I just want to see us get closer to that ceiling rather than staying where we’re at, and I feel like we haven’t progressed enough here lately, so I’d like to see that get a little bit better.
“But to their credit, the kids have put together good at-bats. To score 12 runs and 11 runs in a game back-to-back is really good. Brownsburg was on a roll and they’ve got some really good bats in their lineup. Logan adjusted to a tough first and I thought did a nice job making those adjustments, kept them off-balance and gave his offense a chance to get them back in it and break it open.”
Westfield is now 8-0-1 overall and plays at Carmel on Monday.
