Friday baseball: Carmel beats Peru at home, HSE take down Franklin Central to end regular season, Blazers wrap regular season with 13 wins

The Carmel baseball team scored a 7-4 home win over Peru Friday at Hartman Field.

The Tigers got the game’s first run in the top of the first inning, but the Greyhounds scored two in the bottom of the first. JD Stein and Tyler Walkey got on base with singles, then Hunter Snow sent Stein home with a sacrifice fly. Walkey scored on Parker Heaney’s RBI groundout.

Carmel added two runs in the fifth inning when Snow’s two-run hit brought in Joe Cunningham and Walkey. Peru tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Hounds answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Walkey doubled in John Zangrilli and Jackson Harris, then Snow’s left field hit scored Walkey.

Snow and Walkey both had two hits, with one of Walkey’s hits a double. James Charland also hit a double. Cole Caldwell pitched six innings for the win, striking out five.

Carmel is 15-10 and hosts its Invitational today. The Greyhounds play Cathedral at 10 a.m. and Lawrence North at 1:30 p.m.

Hamilton Southeastern finished up Hoosier Crossroads Conference and regular-season play Friday with a 4-2 win over Franklin Central at Ken Seitz Field.

The Royals scored their first run in the first inning; Evan Haas got home on Maddux Bach’s RBI fielder’s choice. In the second inning, Michael Hoog hit a one-out double, then scored on Alex Billman’s center field hit. Southeastern got two more runs in the fourth inning: Kian Kelly and Drew LaFleur got home after Kam Seitz reached on error.

Hoog had two hits. Ethan Lund pitched six innings for the win, striking out 13 and allowing just two hits.

The Royals finished HCC play 6-8 and the regular season 14-13. Southeastern plays Fishers next Friday, May 24 in the semifinals of Sectional 8 at Noblesville.

University beat Franklin Community 5-4 Friday at RoundTripper Academy.

The Grizzly Cubs scored three runs in the first inning, but the Trailblazers answered by putting up all of their runs in the second inning. Cooper Burnett got the first run when Owen Schellhase reached on error, then Cooper Cammack doubled in Jimmy Caldwell and Schellhase to tie the game.

Jasper Owens came up soon after, and hit a home run into right field, also scoring Cammack. That put University in the lead; Franklin scored a run in the fifth inning, but the Trailblazers held on for the win.

Owens had two hits, while Schellhase hit a double. Laine Spears got the pitching win.

University finished the regular season 13-11-1 and plays at Sectional 43 host Sheridan Wednesday in the first round of the tournament.
