Franciscan Health Heart Center Indianapolis is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The Heart Center at the Indianapolis campus officially opened on March 1, 2005.

Franciscan’s commitment to excellence, innovation and personalized cardiac care in Central Indiana dates back to the 1970s. The Heart Center is dedicated to providing world-class heart and vascular care 24/7 and is leading the way in award-winning, life-changing heart and vascular care.

“While Franciscan Health has offered specialty heart and vascular care for more than 45 years, we’ve certainly experienced numerous advancements in the past 20,” said Terri Ruff, chief operating officer for Franciscan Health Central Indiana. “Our cardiologists and surgeons have been at the forefront of the innovations, every single time. We embrace new techniques and new technology because we know that’s how we best serve our patients.”

Franciscan Health Heart Center Indianapolis developed the emergency heart attack protocol that enabled an ED physician to activate the cardiac cath (catheterization) lab for quicker treatment of heart attack patients. This protocol has since been adopted world-wide as a standard of care. The Heart Center was also first in world to treat heart valve patients with extra-cellular matrix material.

“During the past 20 years, Franciscan Health’s Indianapolis Heart Center has not only provided excellent care, but we’ve also pioneered it, from lowering door-to-treatment times in the cath lab, performing first-in-the world heart valve repairs and having the state’s first certified cardio-oncology center to participating in trials for new interventional cardiac devices,” said Ruff.

Among the services that Franciscan Health Heart Center Indianapolis offers are: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols for cardiac/vascular surgery, minimally invasive techniques for open-heart surgery/interventional procedures, structural heart program addressing heart valve repair/replacement and stroke prevention, 24/7 cardiac provider coverage and an emergency heart attack protocol to ensure patients get to treatment as quickly as possible.

The Heart Center also offers an electrophysiology program for arrythmias and atrial fibrillation (AFib), as well as specialty care programs: heart failure, cardio-oncology, cardiometabolic care, cardio-obstetrics, cardio-palliative care, on-site cardiac, pulmonary and vascular rehabilitation and cardiovascular genetic counseling among other programs.

“Franciscan Health has always been committed to providing excellent, compassionate care,” said Ruff. “For the Heart Center team, that approach has been paired with a passion for innovation, for what can make our patients’ lives better.”

The Franciscan Health Heart Center Indianapolis has been No. 1 in the state of Indiana by Healthgrades for cardiology (two years in a row), cardiac care, pulmonary care (two years in a row) and stroke care (two years in a row). The Heart Center has also recognized as being one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for vascular surgery and among the Top 10% in the Nation for Vascular Surgery for six years in a row (2020-2025).

The Heart Center has been among CareChex Top 100 in the Nation in interventional coronary care for five consecutive years.
