Fourth-quarter surge sends GC past Mavs

Guerin Catholic ran away with its season opener Friday night, as the visiting Golden Eagles scored 21 fourth-quarter points to soar past McCutcheon 27-14.
The two teams were tied at 6-6 going into halftime, with Sam Miller scoring for Class 3A No. 9 Guerin Catholic on a quarterback sneak. The Mavericks jumped ahead 14-6 by the end of the third period, but the Golden Eagles took over in the fourth.
Sophomore Cooper Navarro put in two touchdowns and also made a two-point conversion. Ryan Glenn caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Miller. The Golden Eagles’ defense stepped up as well.
“Obviously we had some key defensive stops,” said GC coach Tom Dilley. The coach said that in the third quarter, Guerin gave up some big plays, but other than that, he thought the defense “played pretty well all night.”
Meanwhile, Miller had a solid night, completing 15 of 22 attempts for 143 yards. Jack Cherry caught six of those throws for 65 yards. Justin Zdobylak was the Golden Eagles’ leading rusher with 89 yards.
Guerin Catholic plays its home opener next Friday, taking on Lafayette Central Catholic in the annual Bishop’s Cup game.
