The city of Fishers and Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability will kick off their annual celebration of National Disability Awareness Month on Friday, March 1. The month-long celebration, presented by Conner Prairie, strives to bring awareness to what life is like for those physical and intellectual disabilities through a series of special events and programs throughout the city.

This year’s theme, Empowering Fishers: Ask How, engages the community to learn more about the accommodations for those with disabilities, shares the value of those with physical and intellectual disabilities in the workplace, and celebrates the talents and contributions of those with disabilities.

“Fishers is a community where all ages and abilities are celebrated,” said Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness. “We are always working to enhance inclusivity and accessibility in our city. This month-long initiative is a call to action to our community to learn more about physical and intellectual disabilities, and to celebrate the diversity of our residents.”

The Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability was formalized in 2017 and is co-chaired by Fishers resident Stacey Oldham and Fishers City Councilor Cecilia Coble.

“As a committee, we strive to create a community where my daughter and others with disabilities have an opportunity for social acceptance, employment and a high quality of life,” said Coble. “We want ‘life without limits’ for people with disabilities.”
