FISHERS – It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Fishers High School swimming program is in the middle of a challenging week.

The Tigers had three high-profile meets on their schedule for this week. On Tuesday, Fishers swam against Carmel, holding its own against one of the best teams in the entire nation. The Tigers then came back Thursday to host Hamilton Southeastern in the Mudsock week.

Fishers stepped up big time, sweeping the Royals in both the girls and boys competitions. The Tigers girls won 120.5-65.5, while the boys were 135-51 winners. The varsity portion of the meet went lightning-fast, taking only 1 hour and 5 minutes to complete. As Fishers coach Joe Keller pointed out, that meant the top swimmers had to swim four events in a very short period of time.

“I was really pleased at the end of the meet,” said Keller. “They still looked really strong and really tough.”

In the girls meet, the Tigers claimed 10 of the 12 events. That included double wins for Nalanie Cortez in the 200 and 100 freestyles, and Jo Jo Ramey in the 50 free and backstroke. Gretchen Osmun was first in diving, Frankie Ramey won the 500 free and Avery Stein took the breaststroke. Fishers also swept all three relays.

The Tigers boys were victorious in 11 events, starting with double wins for Jonny Hines in the 200 and 500 freestyles and Connor Carlile in the individual medley and 100 free. Keaton Chop won the 50 free, Jacob Schade was the diving champion, Tommy Johanneman was first in the backstroke and Daniel Bennett triumphed in the breaststroke. Just like the girls, the Fishers boys swept all three relays.

“They’re stepping up the game,” said Keller. “And they’re really tough and starting to demonstrate that. That’s what I’m probably most excited about. And it’s across the board.”

While the Tigers won big, there were bright spots for the Royals. Audrey Crawford picked up two wins in the girls meet, placing first in the IM and the butterfly. Jihoon Jung won the butterfly in the boys meet.

“I was really happy with how our team swam,” said Southeastern coach Christian Hanselmann. “We competed really hard, good attitudes, put in a really good effort. They put in a really good week of work training.”

Both teams will have a quick turnaround for their next big meet: The Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet, which the Royals will host on Saturday. (The diving portion of the meet takes place tonight).

“I think it’s great preparation for us to be able to figure out how to turn around and come back faster on Saturday,” said Hanselmann. The coach said the setup is “very similar in terms of the timing of the meets with sectional prelims and sectional finals,” which also use a Thursday-Saturday format.

The HCC meet will be the third meet this week for Fishers, and Keller said that taking on “the entire conference” will be a different challenge.

“It’s going to be a tough week,” said Keller. “They’re going to be tired.” But the coach said that if the Tigers keep moving in the direction they were going in during the week’s previous two meets, they will be getting better.

“We just keep encouraging them and what they’re doing,” said Keller. “You can tell, they’re starting to take pride in their efforts. That’s a great place to be.”
