Saturday was a record-breaking day for the Fishers baseball team, as it swept Noblesville in both games of a doubleheader played at the Tigers’ field.
Class 4A No. 2 Fishers established two new records during the doubleheader, one in each game. The first new mark was set by Tigers pitcher Luke Duermit, who threw 16 strikeouts on his way to a 2-1 Fishers victory in the opening game of the day. Duermit pitched a complete game, giving up just two hits and issuing no walks.
Both of the Tigers’ scores came from home runs. Craig Yoho got the first homer in the fourth inning to tie the game, and Caleb Brenczewski followed that with a home run in the fifth.
Noblesville scored its run in the top of the first inning, with Travis Gillian heading home on a wild pitch. Reese Sharp threw a complete game, striking out six.
The second game saw Fishers finish on a tear, scoring six runs in the sixth inning to win 13-6. The Tigers led 5-0 after three innings before the Millers blasted back to cut that lead to 5-4 in the top of the fourth.
Fishers scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to lead 7-4, then Noblesville came back again, getting two runs in the top of the sixth. But the Tigers’ big sixth inning ensured them victory.
It was Yoho’s turn to re-write the record books, as he hit three home runs in the game. Yoho’s big hits translated into six RBIs. Duermit and Brenczewski also had three hits; two of Brenczewski’s were doubles, and he and Trevor Newman totaled two RBIs.
Evan Patrick was the winning pitcher, while starter Luke Albright and closer Taylor Soper each threw five strikeouts. Soper picked up his fifth save of the season.
Reese Sharp hit a solo home run for the Millers, with Alex Cleverly hitting a double. Bryce Masterson went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.
The Tigers are now 3-0 in Hoosier Crossroads Conference play and 7-1 overall. They host New Castle on Tuesday. Noblesville (4-5) begins an HCC series with Westfield Thursday at Don Dunker Field.
