Fishers & Guerin Catholic each claim opening victories

The Fishers girls basketball team opened its season with two wins on Saturday.

First, the No. 3-ranked Tigers beat No. 15 Ben Davis 56-49. The senior Smith twins led the way: Hailey Smith scored 12 points, while Olivia Smith added 11 points. Both have committed to play at Ball State University next year. Alycia Triplett scored 10 points.

In its second game of the day, Fishers defeated No. 20 Center Grove 47-42. The Tigers trailed 36-31 going into the fourth quarter but outscored the Trojans 16-6 in that period to get the win. Hailey Smith scored 19 points.

Fishers plays at Anderson Wednesday.

Guerin Catholic cruised to a season-opening win Saturday at the Eagles Nest, beating Greenwood Christian 51-6.

Ten different players scored for the Golden Eagles, led by Megan Cobb and Caitlyn Sharpe, both of whom had 10 points. Sharpe made a pair of 3-pointers. Regan Haines added six points.

This was the first win for Danielle Cardinal, who made her debut as the Guerin Catholic coach with this game.

The Golden Eagles play again next Saturday, hosting Greenfield-Central.

Hamilton Heights improved to 2-0 with a 36-26 victory at Clinton Prairie on Saturday.

The Huskies led 18-10 at halftime, with Camryn Runner draining a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter. Ella Hickok helped out with a pair of 3s in the third quarter. Runner scored 17 points, Hickok had 10 and Kaylee Rhoton added nine points.

“Nice floor game by Ella Hickok,” said Heights coach Keegan Cherry. The coach said there were “long possessions” in the fourth quarter and credited both Runner and Hickok with making free throws down the stretch.

The Huskies go back on the road Tuesday night, playing at Frankton.

Carmel, which is tied for 15th in the rankings, fell to No. 8 Homestead 57-36 Saturday in the Greyhounds’ season-opener at the Eric Clark Activity Center.

Isabelle Shepherd scored 11 points for Carmel, with Hannah Lach adding eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Mackenzie Woods led the rebounds with six and also handed out seven assists.

The ‘Hounds play their first away game of the season next Saturday at Huntington North.
