Fishers girls take down Homestead to win first regional championship

The Fishers girls basketball team made history Saturday by winning its first-ever regional championship.

The Tigers triumphed at the Marion regional, overwhelming Homestead 61-31. Not only is it Fishers’ first-ever regional title, but the Tigers also set a new single-season record for wins; the team is now 24-2 for the season.

The game was close at first, but Fishers led 12-11 after one quarter. Olivia Smith scored five points in that period. The Tigers pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Spartans 17-3 for a 29-14 halftime lead. Hailey Smith had six points, as did Joirdyn Smith, who scored her six points by making two 3-pointers.

Fishers continued to roll in the third quarter, outscoring Homestead 19-8, which put the Tigers up 48-22. Hailey Smith dominated that period with 11 points, including a pair of triples. Fishers outscored the Spartans in all four of the quarters, adding 13 more in the fourth.

Hailey Smith had an outstanding game, with 19 points and nine rebounds. Olivia Smith added 12 points, with Joirdyn Smith and Talia Harris both scoring nine. Harris collected eight rebounds, while Alycia Triplett pulled seven rebounds.

Fishers will play Fort Wayne Snider in the semi-finals of the Huntington North semi-state on Saturday.
