Fishers Arts Council (FAC) will present Embracing Black Culture as its February and March Exhibit in the Art Gallery at City Hall while Judy Mintze will continue with her Hats Off exhibit in The Alcove at City Hall.
A reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 11, in the gallery, with live poetry readings from Eric Saunders and a special presentation at 7 p.m. The exhibit is open daily, except for holidays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
For the fourth year in a row, FAC presents the visual and written work by students from Fall Creek Junior High, along with several local artists, including Faith Blackwell, William Minion, and Rebecca Robinson. The students from Fall Creek are under the direction of Lilly Grant recipient and art teacher Michelle Feeney.
The exhibit reflects historical figures prominent in Black history, such as Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Martin Luther King and Madam C.J. Walker, as well as figures from today. It includes work showcasing students’ experiences, reactions to events, and their exploration and celebration of the diversity of the local community.
At the Feb. 11 Second Friday reception, there will also be a special program where attendees can interact with the student artists and local artists responsible for the visual art on display from 6 to 7 p.m. Fall Creek Junior High School’s Black Student Union will showcase their photography and provide information about their club, while Eric Saunders, poet and community leader, will offer a poetry reading in the auditorium.
During the second hour from 7 to 8 p.m., there will be a special presentation emceed by guest speaker Travis Brown, CEO of Mojo Up, performances by the 31Svn Street Dance Academy, a video presentation, and more. This exhibit and presentation were made possible by a grant from the Hamilton County Community Foundation.
