The Fishers Arts Council announces the opening of its new exhibit space, “The Alcove.” The Alcove will be home to artists for longer exhibits lasting three months rather than the normal one-month long exhibits at The Art Gallery at City Hall. “The Alcove” will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from Jan. 4 to April 30.
The name “The Alcove” was the selected after a month-long contest where Facebook friends of Fishers Arts Council were asked to name the space. The final name was selected by the FAC Board from the list of names provided.
For the first exhibit in 2020, FAC offers the work of Gale Sturm who enjoys painting a wide variety of subjects from landscapes to ships on the high seas, riverboats, covered bridges, barns, lighthouses, assorted aircraft, steam locomotives “… and anything else that catches my eye.”
Sturm started painting at an early age but stopped painting in college to focus on his theater major at Ball State University. As a teacher at Lawrence Central High School, he concentrated on designing and building state sets for plays and musicals. He designed more than 150 sets for school plays and musicals, Community Theater and Children’s Theater.
“During this time, I learned more and more about painting scenery, theatre painting techniques, and color theory that I found to be most useful when I began painting oils again,” said Sturm.
FAC will have a joint reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10 for Sturm and Jeanette Pomeroy Parssi, who will be the featured artist for the month of January.
