The girls swimming post-season began across Indiana on Thursday with the sectional preliminaries.
Carmel hosted one of the sectionals that involve Hamilton County teams. The Greyhounds are going for a national record-extending 37th consecutive state championship, and they got off to a good start by advancing everyone on to Saturday’s sectional finals.
In fact, Carmel had all of its swimmers finish in the top eight of the prelims, so they will all compete in the championship heat of the finals. Alexandra Shackell made the most noise, as she set two new sectional records in the 50 freestyle (22.56 seconds) and the butterfly (52.12 seconds), easily earning the top seed in both events.
The Greyhounds got the top seed in all 11 swimming events. Lynsey Bowen was first in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Molly Sweeney paced the individual medley and breaststroke, Berit Berglund was first in the 100 freestyle and backstroke, and Carmel placed first in all three relays.
“I was really happy with how the girls swam today,” said Greyhounds coach Chris Plumb. “They raced well, they didn’t take it for granted, they had a lot of team energy and excitement, and I feel really good about Saturday.”
Noblesville advanced 26 of its 27 swims on to Saturday’s finals, with 21 reaching the championship heat and the other five making the consols. The Millers had two relays finish second in the prelims, with the team of Julia Santerre, Katie Sutton, Alli Knott and Amelia Field the 200 free relay runner-up, and the squad of Olivia Motz, Sutton, Santerre and Emily Knott placing second in the 400 free relay.
“We always try to treat prelims as par tof the process, so we want the kids to swim really well here,” said Noblesville coach Aleks Fansler. “They know they’re going to come back here and swim. But for a lot of our kids, getting some good drops is nice and surprising for us.”
Westfield advanced 12 swims to the championship heat, with the other 165 making it to the consolation heat. The Shamrocks had their best finish in the medley relay, where Eliana Hill, Kate Harrison, Alexa Boillat and Alexandra Irvin took seconds.

“I think the kids that needed to be really good tonight were really, really good tonight,” said Westfield coach Darrick Thomas. “We did have couple of ninth places we’d like to sneak in, but overall the team atmosphere was great, attitudes were really awesome, positive, so it was a great night for us as a team.”
Guerin Catholic had 10 swims advance to Saturday. All three of the Golden Eagles’ relay teams reached the championship heat, with Jane Cline, Erin Reynon, Bridgette Keller and Christianna Dunasky placing sixth in the 200 free relay and Reynon, Kalen Moe, Keller and Dunasky taking sixth in the 400 free relay.

Championship Saturday begins at 9 a.m. with the diving prelims, followed by the finals in swimming and diving at 1 p.m.

Fishers hosted the other county sectional on Thursday, with Hamilton Southeastern and Hamilton Heights also competing there.
The Tigers and the Royals both had all 27 of their swims reach the championship heat for Saturday’s finals. Fishers was led by Jo Jo Ramey, who earned the top seed in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Other top-seeded Tigers are Nalanie Cortez in the 100 free, Avery Stein in the backstroke, and the Fishers 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Southeastern picked up the other five top seeds. Audrey Crawford finished first in the IM and butterfly, Kiley Zoeller paced the 50 free, Grace Newton was first in the backstroke, and the Royals’ medley relay also finished first.
The Huskies had five swims reach the championship heat, sending all three relays into the “A” Final. Teegan Madara also qualified for two “A” Finals, placing third in the 500 free. Heights had 12 more swims reach the consols.
