An early Sunday morning single-vehicle crash involving a box truck on U.S. 31 in Carmel caused damage to a highway retaining wall and to the underpass along 136th Street’s roundabouts. The truck crashed through the bridge wall and fell onto the street below.

According to the Carmel Police Department, the truck was travelling southbound on U.S. 31 shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday when it left the roadway and crashed through a bridge wall, falling onto the roadway below, which is 136th Street between the roundabouts.

The driver of the truck was seen by a witness leaving the vehicle and walking away. Police caught up to him and the Carmel Fire Department transported him to St. Vincent hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. He was subsequently arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is inspecting the damage done to both the bridge wall on U.S. 31 and the underpass below. The road under the bridge was deemed safe for travel and was reopened shortly after the investigation was completed.
