A Hamilton County judge on Friday decided that the teen driver involved in a crash that killed a former Hamilton Southeastern High School football star will be tried as an adult.

The Hamilton County court confirmed the waiver to News 8 on Friday.

Mason Alexander, 18, died on March 1 after a vehicle he was a passenger in crashed into a tree and caught fire.

News 8 previously reported that around 9 p.m. March 1, a BMW occupied by the juvenile driver and Alexander was traveling southbound on Florida Road, near Geist Park and 113th Street. The BMW moved into the northbound lane to pass another vehicle while a Toyota RAV4 was coming northbound at the same time.

The BMW and the Toyota swerved to avoid a collision. Both vehicles drove off the east side of the road.

The Toyota hit a mailbox, while the BMW hit a tree and caught on fire.

The driver, 17 at the time of the crash, turned 18 in April. He was detained May 1.

Prosecutors on May 5 filed to waive the case to adult court, petitioning the driver be charged with reckless homicide, reckless driving, and having fake government identification. These would be the proposed charges if the crime was committed by an adult.

Adult charges have not been filed as of 11 a.m. Friday. His initial hearing was set for 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 2.

This is a sad situation for all the families. I am happy to see that it appears charges and those involved are to be treated very fair and not going one sided as so many incidents do when one of the offenders are considered “popular” or a “star”. I have 4 grandchildren who have or are attending HSE. I am saddened to see all the entitled, selfish, lazy kids that are in the school. Hopefully this may be a very hard, sad lessen for some of them in the future. Thoughts go out to all involved in this senseless action.
