Doug W. Van Dyke

Doug W. Van Dyke, 84, Fishers, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 26, 2024, at home. Born on August 12, 1940, in Baltimore, Md., Doug’s life was a testament to service, dedication, and the love he held for his family, his hobbies, and his community.

Doug honorably served his country in the Army Reserves. His commitment to learning led him to earn a bachelor’s degree from Concordia College and a master’s degree in Education from Ball State University. In 1985, Doug began his teaching career at Hamilton Southeastern, later retiring from Franklin/Lapel High School, where he was cherished by students and colleagues alike for his wisdom and unwavering support.

Doug was a man of strong faith, attending Northview Church in Carmel, where he found spiritual fulfillment and solace. His faith was central to his life, and he took great joy in being saved and introducing others to Jesus, sharing the message of Christ’s love and salvation with those around him. A man of many interests, Doug was an enthusiastic bowler, runner, carpenter, and water skier. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors, enjoying camping and boating throughout his life. His love for bowling led him to become a USBC Silver Certified Bowling Coach, a role in which he inspired and guided many bowlers to improve their skills. An inventive spirit, Doug even held a patent for a bowling apparatus, showcasing his creativity and devotion to the sport. He also embraced modern technology with a passion for 3D printing, a hobby that fueled his endless curiosity and innovation.

Throughout his life, Doug’s home was filled with the joy of canine companionship, as he adored his dogs, who brought him comfort and happiness. An avid online shopper, Doug was known for his frequent Amazon purchases and was often found eagerly waiting for deliveries on the porch. His love for sports was equally strong, with a particular fondness for the PBA, Colts, and Pacers. His sweet tooth and joy in life’s simple pleasures were well-known among family and friends.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Marcia Ellen (Mick) Van Dyke; his daughter, Amy Lynn (Chris) Mallery; his son, Eric Douglas Van Dyke; and his beloved granddaughters, Scarlett and Stella Mallery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond A. Van Dyke and Stella A. (Iverson) Van Dyke Wahlund, and by his cousin, Pete (Sally) Stenehjem, who was like a brother to him.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be planned for a later date, with inurnment at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Indianapolis. The Van Dyke family has entrusted Randall & Roberts Funeral Homes with his cremation.
