Hamilton County historian David Heighway will be at the Cicero Library at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11 to give a talk on James A. Houser, a 19th century phrenologist, medical practitioner, public speaker, poet and philosopher, who was based out of Arcadia.
Using $1,100 he made on a circuit tour in Missouri, Houser established the Arcadia Lung Institute in 1882. Housing skeletons and “The Veiled Mystery,” among various medical artifacts, the institute was the largest building in Arcadia.
Heighway will explore Houser’s public appeal, wit and philosophy.
