Dan Canan has announced his candidacy in the upcoming municipal election for the open seat on the Fishers City Council, Northeast District.
Though this is the first time Canan has run for elected office in Fishers, he says he is no stranger to the responsibilities. After running his business in Muncie for 15 years, in 1995 Canan and his wife believed that a different type of leadership for the community was needed, so they decided he should run for mayor. He was elected and followed this with two more elections, serving a total of 12 years.
Canan said it was never his goal to become a career politician, so he made the decision to move back to the private sector. This led him in 2010 to a career in Fishers as CEO of the Fishers Chamber and EVP of OneZone Chamber.
As President of the Fishers Chamber, Canan said he knew it was important to be involved in the community. In addition to numerous boards and commissions that he has volunteered on, he currently serves on the Fishers Redevelopment Commission, and a member of the Launch Fishers/Indiana IoT Lab Board of Directors.
Several of the issues important to Canan include:
- Supporting Fishers’ public safety forces is a number one priority. With adequate funding and progressive leadership, the city’s police, fire and emergency medical personnel will be able to deliver the first-class services residents have received and expect in the future.
- Planned infrastructure, roads, utilities, recreational areas, and smart land planning supporting current residents and future residents of Fishers.
- Strong support of Economic Development because these companies provide new employment opportunities for residents and help lower taxes encouraging addition growth.
The city of Fishers has experienced astounding growth in population and economic development over the past several years. If elected as a member of the City Council, Canan says he will use his experience in the private and public sectors to make decisions ensuring Fishers residents can continue to maintain the high standard of living to which they are accustomed.
