Cross country sectionals: NHS girls win first title in 10 years

The Noblesville girls cross country team gave its home field a performance to remember on Saturday.
The Millers won their own sectional, scoring 34 points to easily take the team championship at the Chanquapin Ridge course at White River Elementary School. Noblesville had four of the top nine runners, all of whom finished the 5,000-meter course in under 19 minutes.
Bella Sharples-Gordon led the way by taking fourth, then Brooke Lahee, Paige Hazelrigg, Sophie Reichard and Madison King finished in places six through nine. After all that, the Millers won their first sectional title since 2009 and third in school history.
Several other teams had great days. Hamilton Heights’ Maria Mitchell won the individual race, setting a new Huskies’ school record by clocking in at 18:14.63.
Westfield finished in second place as a team. Sophia Brown and Sophie Porter took 10th and 11th respectively, and the Shamrocks were the only team to have all of their runners finish under 20 minutes.
Carmel took third place with 77 points, Emily Hand led the Greyhounds by finishing in 12th. Guerin Catholic was fourth as a team, with Bridget Gallagher cruising to a third-place finish.
The top five teams and top 10 individuals not on an advancing team move to next week’s regional, also at Noblesville. Mitchell is the first individual to advance, and she will be joined by Heights teammates Morgan Guthrie, Chloe Henderson and Madison Dotlich. University sent two runners on to the regional: Charlotte Kumler and Jada Swearingen.
In the boys event, Carmel won the team championship, scoring 26 points. This marked the 12th consecutive title for the Greyhounds, and extended their state-leading total to 45 championships.
Carmel had five of its runners finish in the top eight, including individual champion Kole Mathison, who clocked in at 15:32.71. Charlie Schuman placed fourth, then Ben Myers, Will Murphy and Ben Johnson took sixth, seventh and eighth.
Noblesville finished second with a score of 49 points. The Millers had two of the top three runners, with Cole Kimmel placing second and Travis Hickner taking third. Andrew Anderson finished in ninth place.
Westfield was third as a team, with Kai Connor placing fifth for the Shamrocks. Guerin Catholic took fourth; Austin Callahan led the Golden Eagles by finishing 11th.
In addition to those teams, three runners each from Hamilton Heights and University advanced to the regional. Noah Laramore, Lucca Conti and Isaiah Smith moved on for the Trailblazers, while Price Knowles, Preston Miller and Clayton Forrer advanced for the Huskies.

Fishers swept the girls and boys team championships at the Pendleton Heights sectional on Saturday.
In the girls race, the Tigers scored 18 points and had the top three runners. Vera Schafer was the individual winner in a time of 19:17, with Elizabeth Barrett second and Hannah Sale third. Emma Gillespie (fifth) and Emma Julien (seventh) also landed in the top 10.
Fishers was just as dominant in the boys race, scoring 23 points. The Tigers placed all seven runners in the top nine, with Will Clark second and Drew Smith third. After that, Matthew Leppert, Jaylen Castillo, Max McCollum, Tate Meaux and Jonathon Roth placed fifth through ninth.
Hamilton Southeastern took second in both the girls and boys races.
The Royals girls scored 44 points. Lilly Patrick was fourth, Katherine Kesler finished sixth and Brooke Ratliff took eighth place. The Southeastern boys scored 54 points, with Eric Swinson finishing fourth and Jack Patrick taking 10th.
Both Fishers and Southeastern will race in the Delta regional next Saturday.

Hamilton Heights’ Maria Mitchell won the girls race at the Noblesville sectional in a new Huskies school record time of 18:14.63. This would be the first of two sectional titles that Mitchell won on Saturday, as she joined the Heights girls soccer team later that night when it triumphed at the New Castle sectional.
