Cross country sectionals: Carmel wins both races, county teams take all five regional spots

Noblesville hosted the IHSAA cross country sectional on Saturday at the Chinquapin Ridge Cross Country Course, and there were no surprises for the most part.
The same five schools finished in the top five in both the boys and the girls races, which meant they will all advance to next Saturday’s regional, also to be run at Noblesville. Guerin Catholic, Hamilton Heights and University all had individual runners advancing as well.
Carmel won the sectional championship in both races, marking the 43rd sectional title for the boys and the 34th for the girls. Fishers was second in both races.
The Greyhounds boys scored 33 points and landed five runners in the top 10 and had all seven runners place in the top 15. Ben Miller placed second for Carmel, with Trey Harris, Calvin Bates and Thomas Gastineau finishing 6-7-8. Ben Myers took 10th to close the Greyhounds’ scoring.
All those top 10 runners helped Carmel keep comfortably ahead of the Tigers, who totaled 52 points. Fishers got two runners in the top five, with Sam Kuhn third and Ethan Meyer fifth, then placed their other five athletes in the top 20.
Hamilton Southeastern finished third, and also had the race winner. Senior Gabe Fendel breezed to victory in a time of 15:26.67, nearly 13 seconds ahead of second place.
Westfield took fourth; the Shamrocks were helped by a ninth-place result from Nicholas Leahy. Host Noblesville placed fifth with its young group; senior Zachary Freeman led the Millers by taking 22nd.
Noblesville edged out Guerin Catholic for the final regional qualifying spot by two points, 137-139. However, the Golden Eagles advanced six of their seven runners on to the regional as individuals. Quinn Gallagher continued his great season by taking fourth in the sectional.
Other Guerin runners moving on are Andrew Hall, Joseph Barrett, Nicholas Schramm, Holden King and JP Spoonmore. University placed ninth as a team, and had one individual move on to regional: Noah Laramore, who was 43rd overall.
The Greyhound girls scored 41 points to win the sectional trophy. Carmel was led by Phoebe Bates, who won the individual race in a time of 18:51.47. Carmel got two more runners in the top 10: Maddie Dalton took third and Lindsey Roper was ninth. The ‘Hounds placed their first five runners in the top 15.
Fishers scored 71 points, with Debbie Shera taking seventh and Miya Wai placing eighth. Teresa Kraft’s 11th-place result also helped the Tigers rise up to second in a tough field.
Noblesville and Southeastern both scored 78 points; the Millers took third by having the higher-placing sixth runner. Abi Little was out in front for Noblesville by taking fifth place, and the Millers had all of their runners make the top 30.
The Royals got two top 10 finishers: Lulu Black placed fourth, and Halle Hill took sixth. Westfield grabbed the fifth spot, with Gabby Dilick soaring to second place individually.
Guerin Catholic finished sixth as a team, but had five individual regional qualifiers. Paige Schemanske placed 10th to lead the Golden Eagles, and Ellie Schroeder, Bea Perez, Lucia Perez and Raegan Bohbrink joined her as regional qualifiers.
Hamilton Heights will have three runners advance to the regional. Freshman Maria Mitchell led the Huskies by placing 17th, and Abby Christiansen and Abby Roth also qualified.
University freshman Charlotte Kumler placed 44th and qualified for the regional.
