Cross country: Carmel girls, HSE boys race to victory

The Hamilton Southeastern boys and the Carmel girls cross country teams triumphed at the John Cleland Zionsville Invitational, which took place last Saturday at Northview Church in Carmel.

The Royals boys won the junior/senior race, scoring 77 points. Homestead was the runner-up, totaling 97 points. Liam Powers led Southeastern by finishing sixth individually.

The Greyhounds girls scored 61 points, outpacing runner-up Zionsville’s 82 points. Sadie Foley won the individual race, completing the 4K course in 14 minutes, 37.3 seconds. Hamilton Southeastern placed fifth in the girls race with 102 points; Elizabeth Butler and Catey Campbell placed seventh and eighth respectively.

In the girls freshman/sophomore race, Carmel placed second with 47 points, just behind Homestead’s 43. The Greyhounds had three of the top four individual places: Annabel Pollert won in a time of 14:47.5, with Larkin Taylor second and Margo Halle fourth.

Two county runners placed in the top five of the boys freshman/sophomore race. Southeastern’s Isaac Smith took third and Carmel’s Benjamin Meisner was fifth.

Westfield’s girls team swept its way through the Plainfield Relays last Saturday at Swinford Park.

The Shamrocks won both the varsity and junior varsity titles, both team and individual. Westfield had three relay pairs finish in the top five of the varsity race, including the winning duo of Olivia Lozier and Mackenna Condon. The sophomore/freshman pair finished the 6×1 mile relay in 35:36. Gianna Ferreri and Ella Bozarth placed fourth and Sam Foster and Maggie Naas were fifth. The Shamrocks’ other two pairs were Emily Loiselle-Carly Davis and Lina Abriana-Ena Durbin.

The junior varsity race was a traditional two-mile individual run, and the Rocks took care of business by placing eight in the top 10, and 15 in the top 20. Junior Jordyn Landrum won in 12:51, with Olivia Barnett taking third. Other top 10 finishers were Lyla Osborn (fourth), Eliana Colon (fifth), Izzy McCulloch (sixth), Sam Plummer (seventh), Claudia Southworth (eighth) and Charlotte Isaacs (10th).

Fishers placed second out of four teams in both the boys and girls races at the Brownsburg 4K last Saturday.

Brownsburg the boys race 24-38 over the Tigers. Fishers did have the individual winner, with senior Sam Quagliaroli cruising to victory in 11:53.03. Other top seven Tigers runners were Bryson Slagle (seventh, 12:45.42), Parker Melling (ninth, 13:06.92), Nate Thomas (10th, 13:09.90), Declan Mohr (11th, 13:11.29), Dylan Wolf (12th, 13:13.42) and Grant Yount (14th, 13:16.19).

In the girls race, Brebeuf Jesuit was the team winner, scoring 25 points. Fishers totaled 46 points for second place. Abby Lotter led the Tigers by taking third in 15:09.38, followed by Caitlin Hawkins in fourth; she clocked in at 15:18.81. Other top seven Fishers runners were Ashley Wright (11th, 16:13.32), Allie Belush (13th, 16:18.48), Mia Quagliaroli (15th, 16:41.58), Melanie Perez (16th, 16:43.20) and Grier Swaim (17th, 16:45.28).
