“My biggest lesson is that life is truly a gift … and it is up to us to make the absolute most of it.”

Beyond This has announced a leadership summit/mentoring movement to encourage and inspire students in Central Indiana as the nation celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King on the National Day of Service. These efforts are to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Monday, Jan. 20, more than 100 students of diverse backgrounds will join together to symbolize a unified effort and spread a message of hope, grow in their leadership, have fun tubing, engage in service projects and hear from some amazing speakers.

As Dr. King stood for more than just marches and rallies, his concept of “somebodiness,” which symbolized the celebration of human worth and the conquest of subjugation, gave the impoverished hope and a sense of dignity. His courage inspired a nation to service, which will be lived out on this National Day of Service at the Cox Leadership Summit.

This event is in honor of Courtney Cox Cole, an inspirational leader in Central Indiana, who recently died of lung cancer. She was a motivating example of a person who fought to be the best in everything she did – as an athlete in high school becoming a 1989 Indiana Basketball All-Star, to her career as a keen businesswoman and co-owner of Hare Chevrolet, to the bravery and dignity which she used to fight cancer.

“It is our goal to help young people tap into their leadership abilities by demonstrating this act of servant-leadership and humility, gather together with other young people across Central Indiana and to share a message of hope,” said Todd Melloh, founder and CEO of Beyond This. “Each year the Corporation for National and Community Service honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by asking Americans to serve others and on January 20 over 100 students will do so in a very profound way.”

The Cox Leadership Summit is for students in grades 6 through 12 and will be held at Purgatory Golf Club, 12160 E. 216th St., Noblesville. The purpose of this day-long event is to tap into the true leadership potential of local youth. There will be inspirational talks, age-specific break-out groups, service projects and even sledding (if weather permits) at nearby Koteewi Sledding Park. It’s a great way to get kids out from behind their devices to spend a fun day in community.

Cost to attend is $55. For details and to register, check out beyondthis.net/cox-leadership-summit or call (317) 417-3525.
