Community Health Network Foundation names recipient of philanthropic award

Long-time volunteer, donor Rollin Sage receives Jack Heiney Award for Philanthropic Leadership . . .

Community Health Network Foundation officials today presented Rollin Sage with the Jack Heiney Award for Philanthropic Leadership. Sage, 86, is the eighth recipient of the award in its 19 years of existence.

Since the early 1980s, Sage has served in a variety of volunteer roles at both Community Hospital East and Community Hospital North. Currently, twice a week, he greets patients and guests at the main reception desk at Community Hospital North, helping to put them at ease in the hospital setting.

In his professional career, Sage served as a management professional and, since retirement, has applied his business skills in his work as a Community Hospital North Auxiliary Board member and past chair. His leadership has improved the auxiliary’s participation and increased fundraising efforts, offering support for a variety of Community Health Network patients including Neonatal Intensive Care Unit mothers and nurses, oncology patients, babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome and families grieving the loss of a loved one.

“Words can’t express what this means to me,” said Sage. “Mainly, I don’t feel worthy of it, but I promise to live up to all of the expectations of this honor. Having known Jack Heiney personally, that makes this all the more special.”

In addition to his contributions of time and talent, Sage has been a dedicated donor to Community Health Network Foundation since 1989. Most recently, Sage made a significant gift to the Community Hospital East Reinvestment Fund in memory of his daughter and son-in-law, both long-time employees at Community Health Network who passed away in recent years.

Sage’s selfless generosity has been recognized by leaders across Community Health Network, including Joyce Irwin, Community Health Network Foundation’s president and CEO.

“Rollin epitomizes what it means to be a servant leader, consistently placing the needs of others before his own,” Irwin said. “I’m convinced he has never met a stranger, and his easy smile and good-natured humor brighten the day of all who meet him. While Community holds a special place in Rollin’s heart, his service and contributions have undoubtedly made Community even more special for the patients and families who turn to us for care.”

Sage’s unwavering commitment to giving back through volunteerism is especially appreciated by Karen Hicks, Community’s volunteer supervisor for the North campus.

“I have witnessed him give of his time and energy tirelessly over and over again,” said Hicks. “In addition to his two evening shifts per week and work with the Auxiliary fundraisers, he has volunteered in countless instances to assist with special projects or events and has never turned away a fellow volunteer in need, whether it be providing a listening ear or using his van to assist with transportation.”

Sage joins the ranks of seven past recipients of the Jack Heiney Award for Philanthropic Leadership: John W. “Jack” Heiney (1998); Jeanette Reilly, PhD (1999); Gordon C. McLaughlin, MD (2000); Kathryn G. Betley (2003); Thomas A. Ferrara, MD (2006); Janet M. Bingle, MS, RN (2008) and Yvonne Shaheen (2014).

About The Jack Heiney Award for Philanthropic Leadership

The Jack Heiney Award for Philanthropic Leadership was established in 1998 by Community Health Network Foundation’s board of directors to honor Heiney’s long-term commitment to serving Community. The former president and CEO of Indiana Gas Company, Heiney provided four decades of unpaid volunteer service to many of Community’s boards until he died in 2011. He and his wife, Betty, also donated more than $1 million to improve the health of the central Indiana communities that Community serves.
