Colts Training Camp at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield hosted a Salute to Service Day on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
“I think anything like this is just a great opportunity to say thanks to the soldiers because they do a lot of work for us,” Col. Shawn Eaken said. “They sacrifice a lot and their families sacrifice a lot, so it’s a good opportunity for them to get some appreciation.”
Eakins commands the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Army National Guard of Indiana. Around 30 members of the 76th IBCT were present for Colts’ practice as part of the event, as well as service members from the Marines, Air Force, and Air National Guard.
In addition to those currently serving in branches of the military, local police, firefighters, and veterans were on hand at the invitation of Westfield Mayor Scott Willis.
“Being a veteran myself, I understand how important it is to recognize our veterans,” Willis said. “I have an extensive veteran network, but I also put the invitation out on Facebook.”
Approximately 15 to 20 military veterans enjoyed snacks, drinks, and shade with the mayor in the VIP area, in addition to police and firefighters, some of whom were also military veterans.
Eaken said that events that honor service members help keep the military in the forefront of people’s minds.
“There’s less than one percent of Americans who are in the military,” Eaken said. “Recruitment and retention are a top priority, so we have to keep doing things to bring people on the team and keep them on the team.”
