Cicero VFW to honor veterans with special service Monday

The public is invited to bundle up to come celebrate Veterans Day and honor those who have given of themselves by serving our country in the armed forces. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8756 will hold a special ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Cicero Cemetery.

Mize

Ret. Gunnery Sergeant Brett A. Mize, United States Marine Corp NMCB-18 Military Advisor and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8756 Commander, will lead the service. Mize, an Iraq war veteran, who was stationed overseas during his active, combat duty, received numerous awards and recognitions during his distinguished tenure in the service including the Purple Heart, Navy Commendation Awards, Navy Achievement Medal Awards and Combat Action Ribbon among others. He retired after 20 years with the Indiana Department of Corrections serving as Director of Operations and Director of Mental Health Services.

In addition, a raffle is underway for a $750 gift certificate for French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased from any member of the VFW Post 8756 or available at the James Evans Post 341, where the organization is housed. The Post is located at 50 Washington St. (across from the Cicero Post Office). Tickets will be sold until they are gone. Proceeds from the raffle will be directed to help local disabled combat veterans. You do not need to be present to win.

Mize also invites veterans and those currently in the service who are not members of the Post to consider joining the organization which provides support, resources and philanthropy for service men and women and their families and the community.
