“Churches’ Bill of Rights” aims to help Hoosiers of faith understand liberties & limits under the law

Attorney General Todd Rokita & Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith collaborate to roll out newest edition

A second-edition publication produced by Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita in collaboration with Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith – titled the Churches’ Bill of Rights – provides guidance to Hoosiers about the rights and protections afforded to churches and other houses of worship under state and federal laws.

“Religious liberty is guaranteed to all Americans by the U.S. and Indiana constitutions, and we want to ensure Hoosiers understand their rights,” AG Rokita said. “We encourage everyone to be emboldened to practice their faith and participate in civil society to the fullest extent possible.”

The document is written in a question-and-answer format. It covers such topics as the extent to which churches may participate in elections and politics, churches’ tax-exempt status, freedom of worship, protections for church governance and autonomy, and other topics.

I am proud to fight for a state where respect for religious liberty guides the decisions we make, ensuring all Hoosiers can live, work, and thrive together in faith and freedom.”

This document is an update of the September 2024 guidance AG Rokita’s office sent to religious leaders and churches across the state on how to participate in election-related activities and engage on important matters of public policy in ways consistent with their tax-exempt status.
