Chambers announces HSE school board candidacy

Julie Chambers is excited to announce her candidacy for Hamilton Southeastern Schools Board of Trustees – District 4.

Chambers

Chambers and her husband, Sean, live in Fishers with their two daughters, Emily, 6, and Morgan, 4. Emily attends Fall Creek Elementary and Morgan will begin Kindergarten in 2019. They moved to Fishers in 2015, attracted by the excellent schools and growing community.

“Our family moved to Fishers for the schools, something I hear from a lot of families,” said Chambers. “Our school district is absolutely one of the best, but we still have issues to address in our schools. We must continue to improve mental health outreach and drug treatment services, teacher recruitment and retention, facilities updates and communication within the district.”

Chambers is an attorney with a law practice located in Lawrence near Fort Harrison State Park. She established her practice after serving as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Marion County for nearly five years. She also volunteers as a Girl Scout Daisy Troop Leader for her daughter’s troop.

Chambers says that one of the main areas for improvement is communication in the district.

The school board is elected and should be accountable to the community. The board should be transparent in its decision making and find better ways to communicate with parents and teachers.

“Without trust between parents, teachers, community members and the school board, we won’t be able to move HSE forward and continue to improve the educational opportunities for our kids,” said Chambers.

Along with communication, Chambers prioritizes school safety and security, and that the community must continue to work with law enforcement, parents and students to ensure the safety of the kids.

“Every student deserves to attend school in a safe and secure environment,” said Chambers. “However, we must make sure we don’t turn our schools into buildings that feel more like jails. Students thrive when they can feel comfortable and feeling locked down will not encourage better learning.”
